Washington, DC -- U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a senior member of theSenate Armed Services Committee and member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, responded today to Iran’s “nine-step plan” to defuse the nuclear crisis with the West. The offer involves gradually suspending the production of uranium but requires too many concessions by the West.
“Iran's offer is a mirror image to the multiple incredulous and hollow offers by North Korea over the past decade that have all turned out to be lies,” said Inhofe. “Iran and North Korea are the pariahs of the community of nations because they lie, plain and simple, and are bent on the destruction of all who oppose their perverted and deadly ideology. This is just another delay tactic to buy Iran time to finish its development of a nuclear weapon. This has been Iran's goal for the past several years and we cannot afford to give them more time to continue that development. The Obama Administration should reject Iran’s plan as even a basis for conversation, immediately redouble our efforts to tighten economic sanctions against the nation’s radical fundamentalist Muslim government, and support nations like our ally Israel that seek to defend themselves from annihilation.”
According to the report, Iran’s nine-step plan would require the West to first begin dismantling all sanctions, while Iranian stops use of one of two sites used for enriching “20 percent uranium.” Suspension of medium-enriched uranium production would then take place once sanctions have been lifted entirely.
