WASHINGTON, D.C.U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC), today cosponsored a Congressional Resolution introduced by fellow U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) that expresses the Sense of the Senate that the Attorney General of the United States should appoint an outside special counsel to investigate the recent leaks to the news media of classified and highly sensitive information on U.S. military and intelligence plans, programs, and operations.

This resolution comes after a series of confidential national security matters were leaked to the public.

“The string of recent leaks damage national security by compromising ongoing military and intelligence operations,” said Inhofe.  “They strain relationships with allies and expose sources and methods while putting lives at risk.  These troubling developments have united Democrats and Republicans alike in Congress, including leaders of our Intelligence, Armed Services, Foreign Relations, and Homeland Security Committees.  The sources of these leaks have been reported as, among others, participants in ongoing programs, senior Administration officials and presidential aides.  The President’s repeated silence regarding these leaks, except to deny responsibility, is troubling at best.”

“While the two Justice Department attorneys appointed by the Attorney General to investigate these leaks are good men and decent public servants, the fact is the Attorney General is a member of the President's national security team.  No Administration should be expected to investigate itself impartially in the midst of an election, especially when those responsible could well be members of the Administration themselves.”

Inhofe continued, “We are not talking about an isolated instance of a leak.  What we have seen in recent months is indeed an avalanche of leaks on national security matters.  These are the reasons I am joining my colleagues in this call for an outside special counsel with bipartisan acceptance and widespread public trust to investigate these leaks.  The American people and those on the front lines defending America deserve the truth and the best investigation we can offer.”
