WASHINGTON, D.C. – On the 39th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) commended the thousands of Americans who braved inclement weather in the nation’s capital to March for Life. As a strong pro-life advocate and proponent of adoption, Inhofe made the following comments:
“Each year, abortion takes the lives of more than 1 million unborn children in our nation. Thirty-nine years after the Roe v. Wade, the ruling continues to be a blight upon our nation that undermines our value for life, family, and responsibility. President Obama views abortion as a right for women to have reproductive freedom. He even said that abortion gives our daughters the opportunity to fulfill their dreams. I stand with those who today say: No Mr. President! Ending a life for the sake of convenience is not a right! Hundreds of thousands of girls never had the opportunity to fulfill their dreams because their lives were snuffed out before they ever took their first breath. As our Declaration of Independence outlines, the right of life granted us by our Creator is foundational. I am encouraged by all those who are marching for life today, and I will continue to fight in Congress for the most vulnerable and speak for those who have no voice.”
Inhofe’s recent Pro-Life efforts:
Ø Co-sponsor of the Life At Conception Act: This declares that the right to life guaranteed by the Constitution is vested in each human being beginning at the moment of fertilization or when an individual comes into being. This bill simply reinforces that the unborn are persons too.
Ø Co-sponsor of the Title X Family Planning Act: This legislation proposes to prohibit federal family planning funds from being awarded to any grantee that performs abortions.
Ø Co-sponsor of the Child Custody Protection Act: This bill prohibits transporting a minor child across a state line in order to obtain an abortion.
Ø Co-sponsor of the Unborn Child Pain Awareness Act: This legislation ensures that women who seek an abortion are fully aware and informed regarding the pain their unborn child will experience during an abortion. There has been biological evidence that shows that before a baby is six weeks old it responds to touch. By 20-30 weeks an unborn child has more pain receptors per square inch of the body than at any other time during life.
Ø Co-sponsor of the Protect Life Act: This bill prevents taxpayer-funded abortions by applying the longstanding policy of the Hyde amendment to the new health care law. The government should not force Americans to fund programs that explicitly encourage the destruction of human life; this bill would once and for all end federal funding for all abortions and is a step in the right direction.
Ø Co-sponsor of the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act: This bill, if passed, would prohibit government entities from discriminating against health care providers who object to performing abortions. It also prohibits federal funding from being used for any health benefits coverage of abortion. Under current law, federal funds cannot be used for abortion services and organizations that receive federal funds must keep them separate from funding abortions, but this does not always happen. Planned Parenthood receives 23% of its funds from the government under the guise of “family planning.”
Ø Co-sponsor of the Child Interstate Abortion Notification Act: This bill prohibits minors from crossing state lines in order to circumvent the law in order to receive an abortion.
