U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) made the following statement after Senate Democrats prevented a vote on a continuing resolution to fund the government and extend the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for six years:
“Senate Democrats overwhelmingly voted against funding our government—opposing funding for our troops, veterans, seniors, health centers and the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) over illegal immigration. While I am frustrated that Congress was unable to negotiate a long-term spending deal, I recognize that the only thing worse for our military than a continuing resolution is no funding at all. This Democrat shutdown will have serious ramifications to our military’s operations, training and maintenance—negative impacts that we can’t afford.
“I’m going to keep working towards reopening our government and passing a long-term funding bill, but right now, only one thing is clear – it is the American people who will suffer if Sen. Schumer continues his politically motivated shutdown.”
