WASHINGTON-U.S. Senator James M. Inhofe made the following statement in response to the handover of sovereignty in Iraq that occurred at 2:26 AM (EST) today:
“The early handover of sovereignty in Iraq was strategically the right action to take on the part of that nation’s new government. Everything must be done to lessen insurgent attacks in Iraq and I believe the new interim government has made a wise decision in regard to the timing of today’s handover.
“We cannot loose sight of the fact that not long ago the concepts of democracy and personal freedom were but dreams for Iraqi citizens. Today we see a new sovereign nation taking the necessary steps to secure these ideals for all its citizens. That is quite an accomplishment.
“Our role in Iraq is changing. Today our men and women in uniform are supporting the growth of a developing democracy in Iraq. I share America’s pride in our troops’ hard work and achievements.”
