Inhofe Statement on the Conflict Between Georgia and Russia

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today made the following statement on the conflict between Georgia and Russia:
“The situation unfolding in the Georgian region of South Ossetia is tragic, resulting in the loss of lives by all sides,” Senator Inhofe said.  “The actions taken by Russia are not ‘peacekeeping’ in nature and risk expanding the conflict.  Continued hostilities could ultimately destabilize the entire region and negatively impact relations with Western nations.  Georgia has been a strong ally of the United States and has actively been engaged in the Global War on Terror.
“If diplomacy is to have a chance, both sides must immediately cease hostilities and Russia must remove its forces from sovereign Georgian territory.  It is in Russia’s best interest to help calm the tensions in the region.”
