U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today on Turkey’s military action in northeastern Syria:
“Turkey is an important NATO ally with legitimate security interests at stake in Syria, but its unilateral military intervention in Syria is unacceptable. As President Trump has warned, Turkey’s actions will not be without serious economic, diplomatic and security consequences. Erdogan’s actions risk undermining our bilateral relationship, destabilizing northeastern Syria, squandering hard-won progress against ISIS, creating a new humanitarian crisis and harming our Kurdish partners.”
Background: Earlier this week, Inhofe released a statement saying that U.S. policy in Syria should “reflect conditions on the ground” and “ensure the enduring defeat of ISIS,” stressing the need to work with our partners, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces.
