Inhofe Strongly Opposes Becerra Confirmation to be Health and Human Services Secretary

Today, U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) strongly opposed the Senate confirmation of Xavier Becerra to be the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Ahead of the confirmation vote, Inhofe expressed his opposition and concerns in a speech he gave on the Senate floor.

“Xavier Becerra is not fit to be Secretary of Health and Human Services,” said Inhofe. “Mr. Becerra has an appalling track-record: vehemently advocating against pro-life policies in Congress, attempting to force nuns to provide access to birth control and abortion-inducing drugs and pushing for the expansion of access to ‘abortions by mail’ during the pandemic. It is the duty and responsibility of our president to nominate qualified individuals to lead our federal agencies. Sadly, that is not the case with this nominee.

“As we continue the battle for life, I want to assure all Oklahomans and all those who believe in the sanctity of life that I will continue to do everything in my power to fight for our shared beliefs in Congress. I will not be deterred.”

  • Becerra led a years-long lawsuit as Attorney General of California, targeting the Little Sisters of the Poor in an attempt to force the nuns to provide access to birth control and abortion-inducing drugs.
  • Becerra voted against multiple pro-life bills during his time in Congress, including the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban.
  • Becerra supported California’s ban on indoor worship services, a violation of the First Amendment and a fight he lost in the Supreme Court.
  • Becerra has expressed publically his desire to decriminalize illegal immigration
