Inhofe to Democrats: Say the Border is a Crisis

U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.) today introduced a resolution to simply and plainly state that it is the Sense of the Senate that the current influx of migrants at the southern border of the United States constitutes a crisis. Despite the simplicity of the resolution, it was blocked by Senate Democrats.

Cosponsors of the resolution include Sens. Jim Risch (R-Idaho), Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), John Barrasso (R-Wyo.), Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.), John Boozman (R-Ark.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Todd Young (R-Ind.), Cindy Hyde-Smith (R-Miss.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Mike Braun (R-Ind.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.V.), Mike Rounds (R-S.D.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.), Rick Scott (R-Fla.), John Thune (R-S.D.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska), Ted Cruz (R-Texas) and Steve Daines (R-Mont.).

Inhofe spoke on the Senate floor about the resolution. Watch his remarks and his rebuttal to the Senate Democrats here.

As Prepared for Delivery:

It’s obvious to just about everyone outside Washington that the situation on our southern border is a crisis. Could anyone really believe it isn’t a crisis?

Sadly, the answer is yes.

President Biden and the DHS Secretary refuse to call this a crisis. It’s not just a “challenge” – it is far beyond challenging. You don’t have to take my word for it – look at the facts.

We’ve had a 173 percent increase in border apprehensions compared with one year ago.

This past February’s apprehensions were highest total for February in 14 years.

DHS admits we are on track for the most illegal migrants in more than 20 years.

Biden sent FEMA in to help – their job is emergency management.

Last week, mainstream media news reports found the Administration is restricting information Border Patrol agents are allowed to share with the media about the crisis. Border agents claim they are under an unofficial “gag order” And they are being told to deny media requests for “ride-alongs” the border.

The DHS Secretary claims he’s committed to “openness and transparency” but his actions speak louder than his words.

Maybe this Administration is doing this and refusing to call it a crisis because their policies have invited this surge.

President Biden has frozen funds Congress directed for building the wall, he ended the “Remain in Mexico” asylum policy, and has called for mass amnesty.

Illegal aliens know Biden is opening our borders up and they intend to take advantage. They are even wearing shirts that say “Biden: Please Let Us In!”

I know a lot about the southern border – I’ve been countless times seeing first-hand the problems on both the American and Mexican side.

I’m disappointed this Administration is reversing the progress we made over the past four years and shocked they simply won’t acknowledge it as a crisis.

Border security should not be a partisan issue – and I’m glad there are a few Senate Democrats that share my concern about this crisis – I applaud them for speaking out. I introduced a resolution that I think every senator will agree with – it simply states that, “It is the sense of the Senate that the current influx of migrants at the Southern land border of the United States constitutes a crisis.”

That’s it – nothing more to it than that.

So now I ask unanimous consent that the resolution be considered read a third time and passed and that motions to reconsider be considered made and laid upon the table.
