U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today praised the Department of Defense (DOD) for conducting and releasing its first-ever annual suicide report. This report provides data on annual DOD suicide rates and counts to the public.
“Any suicide is a horrible, preventable tragedy, and far too many lives are being lost because of it across the country. We’ve got to do everything we can to reduce suicide rates, especially in our service members and military families. Having this data will help the Pentagon better understand the situation within their purview—a critical first step to addressing the problem,” Inhofe said.
“Sadly, this report shows that, like the rest of the nation, the numbers aren’t trending in the right direction. We know this problem is about more than numbers and statistics. The Pentagon should use this data to address causes and risk factors, and make sure all service members and military family members know they can get help before it’s too late.”
