U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, made the following statement after meeting with General Mark Milley; Mark Esper, Acting Secretary of Defense; and David Norquist, Performing the Duties of the Deputy Secretary of Defense, earlier today. General Milley has been nominated to serve as Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and President Trump has issued his intent to nominate Acting Secretary Esper to be Secretary of Defense and Mr. Norquist to be Deputy Secretary of Defense.
“The Department of Defense needs strong, confirmed leadership, and after meeting with Secretary Esper, General Milley, and Mr. Norquist, I feel confident that they are the right choices to lead the Department of Defense at this pivotal time.
“As Chief of Staff of the Army, General Milley has led with distinction. It is clear he understands our national security priorities and is willing to make tough decisions, attributes which will serve him well if he is confirmed as our nation’s highest-ranking military officer. I look forward to questioning him further at our nomination hearing on Thursday.
“Secretary Esper and Mr. Norquist have already shown their commitment to the future of our military in their current roles, and, today, both men confirmed their acumen, dependability and dedication to our nation. I’m eager to receive their formal nominations and look forward to scheduling their hearings as soon as possible.”
