U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, made the following statement on President Trump’s intent to nominate key positions at the Department of Defense:
“President Trump has made a good choice in quickly signaling his intent to nominate Secretary Esper to be Secretary of Defense," Sen. Inhofe said. "This position is far too important to our national security to continue being filled on an acting basis for any longer. Secretary Esper’s credentials, as well as his performance as Secretary of the Army, make him a solid candidate to lead the Department, and the Armed Services Committee looks forward to considering the nomination when it is received.
“I am further pleased to see that the President intends to nominate David Norquist as Deputy Secretary of Defense. Mr. Norquist has been performing the duties of Deputy Secretary of Defense for the past six months, and he has been a stabilizing influence on the Department. In addition, Under Secretary McCarthy has served ably for the past two years, and I commend his selection to fill Secretary Esper’s shoes. I am glad we’re moving closer to having confirmed senior leadership at the Pentagon—though more work remains—and I look forward to bringing all three nominees in before the Armed Services Committee as soon as possible.”
