Today, by a vote of 90-8, the Senate overwhelmingly voted to confirm Dr. Mark Esper to be the 27th United States Secretary of Defense. U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, made the following statement praising the confirmation:
“For nearly four decades, Dr. Mark Esper has served as a soldier, public servant, industry leader and, most recently, as Secretary of the Army,” Inhofe said. “In that time, he has demonstrated integrity, leadership and good judgement. I am pleased that President Trump recognized that Dr. Esper is the right man for the job, and that my colleagues in the Senate, after careful consideration, agreed by confirming him on an overwhelmingly bipartisan basis.
“The Department of Defense has been without Senate-confirmed leadership for far too long. Now, with Dr. Esper’s official appointment, the Department will have a clear, capable leader to take us forward as we work to implement the National Defense Strategy, restore our military advantage and protect American families. I look forward to continuing to confirm additional, critical civilian leader roles at the Department of Defense in the coming weeks.”
Earlier in the day, Inhofe spoke on the Senate floor in support of Dr. Esper's confirmation. Watch and read his remarks here.
