U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, today released the following statement regarding the Trump administration's announcement that it will impose sanctions on the government of Turkey as a result of its purchase of the Russian-made S-400 air and missile defense system:
"President Trump has taken the right step in holding Turkey to account for the ill-advised step of acquiring a Russian air and missile defense system instead of turning to its Western partners to fulfill its security needs. Sanctioning Turkey for purchasing, accepting and testing the Russian-made S-400 air defense system continues President Trump’s proven track record of being tough on Russia. The consequences of President Erdogan’s decision to jeopardize U.S. national security and support Russian interests were consistently made clear on numerous occasions – there is no surprise here. I applaud President Trump’s removal of Turkey from the F-35 program and his imposition of sanctions as required by the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act. President Trump’s tailored, targeted sanctions send Turkey, and other countries looking to do Russian arms transactions, the exact right message: this will undermine and not enhance your security."
