Today, after the Senate Armed Services Committee voted to favorably report the nomination of Dr. Mark Esper to be Secretary of Defense, U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement:
“Not only does the Department of Defense need Senate-confirmed leadership, it needs strong, capable, committed leadership. Following his nomination hearing and meetings over the past several weeks, it’s clear that Dr. Esper has the honor, integrity and leadership qualities needed at the Pentagon at this point in time,” Inhofe said. “With all the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead—rebuilding and modernizing our military, addressing strategic competition from China and Russia and taking on the many national security threats facing our nation—it’s critical the Senate act quickly to confirm Dr. Esper. I look forward to voting on his confirmation soon.”
The Committee also voted to advance 1,231 pending military nominations in the Army, Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps, including General Mark A. Milley, to be Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
