U.S. Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today on critical security assistance to Ukraine:
“I commend the Administration for providing critical security assistance to Ukraine to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity and push back against Russian aggression. After the Obama Administration dithered for years, President Trump took the decisive step in 2017 to move forward with lethal assistance that Ukraine needs and deserves to defend itself. The Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative is the cornerstone of American support for the security and stability of Ukraine and the region, and I look forward to continuing our commitment in the fiscal year 2020 defense authorization bill.”
Background: In April, Inhofe wrote an op-ed in Politico calling for additional military aid to Ukraine. The Inhofe-led National Defense Authorization Act of Fiscal Year 2020 authorized up to $300 million to provide security assistance to Ukraine, of which $100 million would be available only for lethal assistance.
